Towards ambitious, just and implementable NDCs: The role of think tanks
INETTT at COP29 in Baku
About this event
At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, INETTT and its global membership of think tanks contributed their expertise to discussions on advancing just and implementable energy transitions.
INETTT hosted the side event “Towards ambitious, just and implementable NDCs: The role of think tanks in facilitating the co-production of enhanced climate and energy targets” at the Regional Climate Foundation Pavilion.
The event brought together INETTT members from six countries – Japan, Indonesia, South Africa, Pakistan, Brazil and Mexico – who shared insights on the evolving consultation processes for Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of the 2025 UN submission deadline. They discussed the current state of play in their countries and proposed ways governments and civil society organisations, including think tanks, can collaborate more closely to develop ambitious, equitable and implementable climate targets.
Evidence presented emphasised that involving think tanks early in the NDC drafting process can improve the realism and social equity of national climate commitments, marking a shift from the traditional top-down approach.
